The Surprising Guests at the Stable

Every nativity scene has some common characters included - obviously the Baby Jesus, his mother Mary, and his father Joseph. You might also see an angel and maybe some farm animals nearby as well. But there are also some characters that probably shouldn't be there...or at least we wouldn't expect them to be. And yet they are vital to the story of the birth of Jesus and vital to our full understanding of God's acceptance and grace that he offers to all of us.

Scripture References: Matthew 2:11-12, Matthew 2:1-2, Luke 2:16, Luke 2:11-12, Luke 2:17, 2 Corinthians 5:17

From Series: "Christmas Surprises"

Christmas time has the potential to give us lots of surprising moments. We might receive a gift we didn't expect, the weather can change on us almost instantly, a relative may show up unexpectedly at a family gathering. When we look at the story of the birth of Jesus, we see lots of unexpected moments as well. At Flagstone this Christmas, we are going to discover (or re-discover) some of the surprises surrounding the arrival of a newborn baby in the small town of Bethlehem.

The Church as a Sheep

Sheep are not always viewed as the most intelligent animals. They're also skittish and somewhat helpless. And yet multiple times in His word God describes His people, especially His church, as sheep. At first glance, it doesn't seem like a very positive thing that God views us as helpless, defenseless animals with questionable intelligence. Is that really what God sees when He looks at us? Or is there a deeper truth we can discover when we picture ourselves as part of God's flock?

Scripture References: John 10:14-16, Matthew 9:36, 1 Peter 5:2-3, Hebrews 10:25, John 21:15-17, John 10:4, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:8, Ecclesiastes 4:10, Romans 7:19

From Series: "Snapshot"

Throughout the Bible there are various metaphors and illustrations used to describe the church. These "snapshots" give us a deeper understanding of how we connect to God and to each other and what our purpose is in this world. We are going to take a closer look at some of these descriptions in scripture so that we can develop a clearer picture of our God and His relationship with His church.
