The Surprising Arrival of the Messiah

Several moments in the Christmas story were unexpected. One of the biggest surprises is how Jesus chose to enter our world in the first place. It wasn't with a parade or nationwide proclamation. It wasn't as a conquering warrior or a popular politician. The Son of God, the Messiah, chose to enter our world as a defenseless Baby. That was a surprise! That was unexpected! But why does that matter? What is it about the surprising birth of Jesus that impacts my life?

From Series: "Christmas Surprises"

Christmas time has the potential to give us lots of surprising moments. We might receive a gift we didn't expect, the weather can change on us almost instantly, a relative may show up unexpectedly at a family gathering. When we look at the story of the birth of Jesus, we see lots of unexpected moments as well. At Flagstone this Christmas, we are going to discover (or re-discover) some of the surprises surrounding the arrival of a newborn baby in the small town of Bethlehem.

Who Do You Say I Am?

Words and names carry a lot of power. The names we use or the character traits we use to describe someone often stem from our perception of that person or what we've been told about them. In His time on earth, Jesus was referred to by a lot of different names - some positive and some negative - based on what various people thought of Him or had heard about Him. With that concept in mind, Jesus asked His disciples an important question...one that we still need to answer for ourselves today.

Scripture References: Matthew 11:29, Mark 8:27-29, Mark 8:34, Colossians 2:15, Hebrews 4:15-16

From Series: "Exploring the Questions of Jesus"

During His ministry, Jesus was asked a lot of questions: "Why do you say the things you do?" "Can you heal this person?" "What do you think about (insert hot topic here)?" But Jesus also asked a lot of questions, questions that challenged people to take an honest look at their actions, their motives, even their faith. And those questions that Jesus asked hundreds of years ago are still relevant questions for us today. For the next few weeks at Flagstone we are going to discover a deeper understanding of God (and hopefully a deeper understanding of ourselves) as we wrestle with some of the questions Jesus asked.
